Venezuela floods: Six missing and 150+ homes damaged by heavy rains
Severe rainfall caused by tropical wave number 40 has triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and river overflows across Caracas and the Venezuelan states of Miranda and Aragua.
Authorities report at least six people are missing. In Caracas, a mother and son were swept away by a river. In Miranda's Guaicaipuro municipality, rescue teams searched for a couple after their vehicle fell into a ravine; while a young girl was successfully rescued, two others remain missing. In Aragua's José Félix Ribas municipality, two people are also missing after their vehicle was carried away by rising waters.
Infrastructure damage is significant, with at least 156 homes affected in Guaicaipuro. In Caracas, the San Pedro River overflow caused the collapse of the Valle-Coche highway and trapped between 60 and 70 vehicles. The Mayor of Caracas noted that the volume of rain in the capital was equivalent to two months of precipitation falling in just 45 minutes.
Emergency services, including Civil Protection and the National Guard, have been deployed to manage road blockages on the Panamericana highway and to monitor critical river levels. In Aragua, a waterspout was also observed over Lake Los Tacarigua following the storm.
