Venezuela government and opposition reach key political agreements
The Venezuelan government and opposition have concluded their first cycle of political negotiations in Caracas. Led by Jorge Rodríguez and Dinorah Figuera, the talks resulted in several key agreements aimed at strengthening democracy and addressing national emergencies.
Central to the agreements is a commitment to overhaul the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) to reform the judicial system. Additionally, both parties agreed to cooperate in recovering Venezuela's international gold reserves currently held at the Bank of England. These funds are intended to assist victims of the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck the country on June 24.
Following the talks, the opposition delegation, represented by Figuera, pledged to prioritize the release of political prisoners. According to the NGO Foro Penal, approximately 382 individuals remain detained for political reasons. While the negotiations offer a potential path toward electoral stability, some former detainees expressed skepticism regarding the long-term intentions of the involved parties.
