Venezuela government and opposition to start dialogue in Caracas FAST-MOVING
The Venezuelan government, represented by National Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez, and a sector of the opposition, led by former 2015‑elected Assembly president Dinorah Figuera, have agreed to hold a first face‑to‑face dialogue meeting in Caracas next week. Both sides announced identical delegations of six members each. The government team includes Jorge Rodríguez, Ana María San Juan, Jorge Arreaza, América Pérez, Génesis Garvett and Pedro Infante. The opposition team is headed by Figuera and includes Marco Aurelio Quiñones, Ramón López, Jorge Millán, Juan Miguel Matheus and Sergio Vergara.
The agreed agenda focuses on three priorities: assistance to the more than 5,500 victims of the June 24 twin earthquakes, strengthening democratic institutions, and guaranteeing political rights and guarantees. The United States has said it supports the process but is not a negotiating party. Families of political prisoners have asked that their release be placed on the dialogue agenda, while exiled opposition leader María Corina Machado has confirmed she will not take part in the talks.
