Latin American regions launch widespread animal welfare and veterinary campaigns
Various regions across Latin America and the Caribbean are implementing extensive veterinary programs to improve animal welfare and public health. These initiatives primarily focus on mass sterilization, rabies vaccinations, and deworming to control pet populations and prevent zoonotic diseases.
In Mexico, San Luis Potosí conducted the CastraLAT campaign, providing hundreds of free sterilizations, while Apetatitlán launched a public veterinary clinic with low-cost services. In Ciudad Juárez, the DABA department held weekend drives for microchipping and vaccinations. In Venezuela, Misión Nevado and local governments in Aragua, Barinas, Monagas, and Falcón have activated mobile clinics and new wellness centers to provide free surgical and preventive care.
In Argentina, municipal programs in Villa Gobernador Gálvez and Berazategui are utilizing mobile operating rooms to bring sterilization and vaccination services directly to neighborhoods. In Bolivia, the municipality of El Alto has distributed nearly one million vaccine doses for an upcoming canine and feline rabies campaign. Additionally, in Aruba, Xavier University veterinary students partnered with the Contreras Clinic to provide physical exams and preventive treatments as part of a World Animal Day initiative.
In Chile, the 2027 budget proposal includes a significant reduction in funding for the Program of Responsible Pet Ownership, though authorities state that ongoing projects will continue.
