Venezuela media and NGOs demand end to censorship

A coalition of 38 media outlets, 63 civil society organizations, and 164 individuals has released the ‘Manifiesto por la Libertad de Expresión en Venezuela’ to demand an end to state censorship and political persecution.

The manifesto calls for the immediate repeal of several restrictive laws, including the Hate Law, the Resorte Law, the NGO Oversight Law, the Simón Bolívar Law, and the Anti-Blockade Law. Signatories also demand the transformation of the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) from a political control tool into an autonomous, technical, and auditable entity.

Additional demands include the cessation of harassment against journalists and activists, the release of political prisoners detained for their opinions, the return of confiscated assets to media companies, and the restoration of revoked broadcasting licenses. The group emphasizes that restoring freedom of expression is a fundamental requirement for the country's democratic reconstruction.

Separately, reports on Venezuela's institutional crisis highlight systemic corruption. In the February 2026 Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International, Venezuela scored 10 out of 100, ranking 180th out of 182 countries.
