Venezuela and U.S. discuss sanction relief for earthquake recovery
The governments of Venezuela and the United States are engaged in bilateral discussions aimed at lifting or easing economic sanctions to facilitate the flow of multilateral aid. This follows a devastating double earthquake in June, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, which resulted in over 6,500 deaths.
Michelle Muschett, the UNDP Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, confirmed that these talks are ongoing. She noted that U.S. sanctions are directly impacting the arrival of international technical assistance and funds necessary for recovery. A Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) presented by the UNDP estimates that Venezuela requires $21 billion for reconstruction, with approximately 70% of those costs dedicated to repairing or replacing housing.
Muschett emphasized that the humanitarian need for recovery must take precedence over geopolitical dynamics, noting that Venezuela would require years to recover using only its own resources.
