Venezuela-Japan bionic technology partnership

Overview

Venezuela has entered into a partnership with the Japanese firm Kawatek Co. Ltd. to implement bionic technology for amputee rehabilitation. Announced by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, the agreement focuses on providing advanced prosthetics to victims of recent seismic events and other incidents.

The cooperation is designed to be executed in phases, prioritizing upper limb prosthetics before moving to lower limbs. The initiative includes technological transfer, specialized training for local engineers, and the establishment of a scientific and technological development center to build domestic manufacturing capabilities.

To support these efforts, the Venezuelan government inaugurated the modernized “Profesor Lenín Molina Peñaloza” Orthotics and Prosthetics Laboratory in Caracas. Located within the “Dr. José J. Arvelo” National Rehabilitation Institute, the facility aims to serve over 1,600 patients monthly.
