Venezuela opposition delegation led by Dinorah Figuera arrives to resume US‑mediated dialogue with chavismo

A delegation of the 2015‑elected Venezuelan Assembly, headed by former opposition deputy Dinorah Figuera, entered Venezuela on 5 August 2026 via Valencia and Barcelona airports. The group, which includes Marco Aurelio Quiñones, Ramón López, Jorge Millán, Juan Miguel Matheus and Sergio Vergara, is set to begin formal talks on 6 August with the government side led by parliamentary president Jorge Rodríguez.

The talks, mediated by the United States and supported by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aim to address the political transition after the disputed 2024 elections, electoral and judicial reforms, the release of political prisoners, and the lifting of international sanctions. A primary agenda item is the response to the double earthquake that struck on 24 June 2026, which caused over 6 000 deaths, more than 16 000 injuries and displaced around 18 000 people. The opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia will not attend in person but have expressed support for the process. While parties such as Primero Justicia and Voluntad Popular participate, others like Acción Democrática and La Causa R have distanced themselves. Analysts note the strong U.S. influence distinguishes this dialogue from previous attempts.
