Venezuela nears deal to move $4 billion in gold reserves to New York

Venezuela's government and opposition are reportedly nearing an agreement to transfer approximately $4 billion in central bank gold reserves from the Bank of England to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Under the proposed terms, the interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez would gain legal control over the assets, which consist of roughly 31 metric tons of gold. However, the agreement would prohibit the immediate sale of the bullion. Instead, the reserves could serve as collateral for government loans to fund national expenses, including reconstruction efforts following devastating earthquakes in June.

The potential deal could resolve a seven-year legal and political dispute that began in 2019 when several nations, including the UK and US, recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the legitimate president. The Bank of England has withheld the gold for years due to these legitimacy disputes. This development is viewed as a significant step in the US-backed negotiation process between the Venezuelan interim government and the opposition.
