While the Trump administration negotiated an agreement with the state-owned mining company Minerven to sell up to one ton of gold through the trader Trafigura, American refineries are stalling the processing of shipments worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Refineries claim they cannot certify that the metal is free from links to ‘organized crime, corruption, or environmental destruction.’ Investigations suggest some gold was transported before site visits were conducted and that parts of the supply are allegedly linked to bribes paid to criminal gangs.
