Venezuela projected to reach 85,500 new cancer cases by 2026
The Sociedad Anticancerosa de Venezuela (SAV) reports that Venezuela is projected to reach 85,500 new cancer cases by the end of 2026. According to the institution, approximately 234 new cases are diagnosed daily, resulting in an average of 97 deaths per day.
Annual deaths are estimated at 34,484, representing an increase of 2,484 deaths compared to 2024. The projected breakdown of new cases shows 51.7% affecting males and 47.6% affecting females. Among deaths, 51.8% are expected to be men and 48.9% women. Breast and cervical cancer remain the leading causes of death for the female population in the country.
Dr. Juan Saavedra of the SAV emphasized that these figures serve as an alert for collective action, calling for synergy between the public sector, medical professionals, and businesses. He highlighted three essential pillars for combating the disease: education, early diagnosis with timely treatment, and increased investment. The report also noted that in Latin America, only 20% of diseases are detected in time, which directly impacts mortality rates.
