Venezuela poll shows strong public backing for private investment in the electricity sector

A recent national poll in Venezuela found that 81% of respondents favor allowing private capital into the electricity system, with 43% supporting full privatization and 38% preferring a mixed public‑private model. At the same time, 66% rated the current power supply negatively, describing it as poor or terrible, while a majority live on incomes at or below $240 a month.

These findings have spurred a legislative proposal in the National Assembly to enable private concessions across the entire electric grid as part of a broader response to the country’s energy crisis. Separate economic commentary notes that more than half of Venezuelans also back a formal dollarisation of the economy, though economists warn that adopting the US dollar would require constitutional changes, an agreement with the Federal Reserve, and would eliminate independent monetary policy.

Both issues reflect mounting pressure on the government to implement reforms amid hyperinflation and declining living standards.
