Venezuela releases nearly 900 political prisoners, says rights group

Venezuelan human‑rights NGO Foro Penal verified that 894 people detained for political reasons have been freed since the government began a release process on 8 January. The latest batch includes individuals such as Andreina Alemán, Jhon Jaimes and Daniela Araña Gutiérrez, among others.

Foro Penal estimates the total number of political detainees released to be close to 900, while more than 350 remain incarcerated. The organization says a February amnesty law has been applied slowly, prompting families to hold vigils and protest outside the U.S. embassy in Caracas. The NGO also notes that since 2014 the regime has imprisoned over 19,000 people for political motives.
