Panama earthquake triggers massive relief efforts and $17.4M insurance payout

A magnitude 7.5 to 7.7 earthquake struck the Azuero Peninsula in southern Panama on October 9, 2026, triggering hundreds of aftershocks and causing significant damage. The disaster has affected over 19,000 people, with thousands remaining in 46 emergency shelters across provinces including Veraguas, Los Santos, Herrera, and Coclé.

Infrastructure damage is widespread. Approximately 23% of inspected homes have suffered total loss, while over 60% show moderate to partial damage. The government has committed to rebuilding six health facilities, including the Hospital de Tonosí, and is coordinating housing solutions for displaced families. Educational institutions have also reported significant damage.

International and domestic relief efforts are underway. Venezuela has dispatched 40 tons of humanitarian aid and technical specialists to assist with infrastructure inspections. The United States has pledged an initial $5 million in aid and provided logistical support, including heavy transport trucks and search-and-rescue specialists. Additionally, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has distributed emergency kits to thousands of people.

Financially, Panama is set to receive a US$17.4 million payout from CCRIF SPC through a parametric earthquake insurance policy, a sum that exceeds 11 times the original premium paid by the Panama Savings Fund.
