Venezuela sets first in‑person dialogue meeting between government and opposition

On 1 August 2026 the government’s parliamentary leader Jorge Rodríguez and opposition representative Dinorah Figuera held a telephone call that launched a new political dialogue in Venezuela. Both sides agreed to hold the first face‑to‑face meeting in Caracas the following week.

The government delegation will be led by Rodríguez and include Ana María San Juan, Jorge Arreaza, América Pérez, Génesis Garvett and Pedro Infante. The opposition team is headed by Figuera and comprises Marco Aurelio Quiñones, Ramón López, Jorge Millán, Juan Miguel Matheus and Sergio Vergara.

The agreed agenda focuses on three pillars: humanitarian assistance for the victims of the 24 June 2026 double earthquake (which killed more than 5 500 people), strengthening of democratic institutions, and the guarantee of political rights. The United States, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio and chargé d’affaires John Barrett, is providing diplomatic backing for the process.
