Venezuela seeks recovery of UK-held gold to fund earthquake relief
Venezuela is seeking to recover approximately 31 tons of gold, valued at over $1.2 billion, currently held by the Bank of England. National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez stated that if these funds are released, they will be used entirely to assist victims of the devastating earthquakes that struck the country on June 24, which recorded magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 and resulted in over 6,400 deaths.
In response to the seismic activity, the Venezuelan government has launched extensive recovery efforts. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez reported that 1,019 schools were affected by the tremors, and a national plan is underway to rehabilitate educational infrastructure. Additionally, the government is managing controlled demolitions of unstable structures and working with the United Nations to transition from emergency seismic relief to long-term sustainable development projects.
On the diplomatic front, the National Assembly has appointed Ramón Gordils as the new ambassador to Egypt, a role that includes concurrent representation in Eritrea and Sudan, as well as representing Venezuela at the League of Arab States. Meanwhile, reports indicate ongoing negotiations between the United States and Venezuela regarding potential U.S. participation in various Venezuelan oil fields.
