Venezuela Supreme Court extends state of economic emergency

The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) has approved a new extension of the state of economic emergency in Venezuela. This decision, following a request by Delcy Rodríguez, extends the exceptional measures for an additional 60 days.

This marks the sixth consecutive extension of the decree, which has been in effect since April 2025. The state of emergency grants the Executive extraordinary powers to make economic decisions without parliamentary oversight, including the suspension of taxes, approval of public credit operations, and authorization of unbudgeted expenditures.

The organization Acceso a la Justicia has criticized the move, warning that normalizing a state of exception violates constitutional limits and creates grave legal insecurity. The organization noted that the Constitution typically provides a maximum period of 120 days for such measures, arguing that maintaining them as a permanent rule undermines the legal framework.
