Venezuela economic emergency decree extensions

The Constitutional Chamber of Venezuela’s Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) has ratified the extension of a state of economic emergency. This measure, requested by acting president Delcy Rodríguez, extends Decree No. 5.443 for an additional 60 days to protect the national economy, stimulate non-oil production, and secure resources for essential services like water and electricity.

This decision represents the sixth consecutive extension of the decree, which has been active since April 2025. The state of emergency grants the Executive Branch extraordinary powers to bypass parliamentary oversight for actions such as suspending taxes, approving public credit, and authorizing unbudgeted expenditures.

The organization Acceso a la Justicia has criticized the ongoing use of these measures, warning that “normalizing a state of exception violates constitutional limits and creates grave legal insecurity.” The group noted that the Constitution typically limits such measures to 120 days, arguing that their continuous application undermines the nation’s legal framework.
