Venezuela transport sector seeks bonuses and automated fare systems
Stakeholders in Venezuela's transportation sector are calling for financial adjustments and technological upgrades following a rise in transit fares to 220 bolívares at the start of October.
William Cordero, claims secretary for the Sutrasiot union, has urged employers to implement a transportation bonus to assist workers. He noted that the daily fare cost significantly impacts low-wage earners, highlighting the discrepancy between current wages and the rising cost of commuting. Cordero also expressed concerns regarding the consistency of government social assistance payments through the Patria platform.
Separately, Fernando Mora, executive director of the Venezuelan Chamber of Transport Companies, stated that the current social fare of US$ 0.25 is insufficient to cover actual operating costs, which he estimates range between US$ 0.70 and US$ 1.00. Mora proposed the implementation of an automated payment system to allow for daily fare adjustments and suggested that a transportation subsidy be provided to public and private sectors, students, the elderly, and people with disabilities to maintain service quality.
