Venezuela public transport fare increases

Overview

In late September 2026, public transportation fares increased in the northern zone of Anzoátegui state, Venezuela. Following an agreement between national authorities and operators, bus fares rose from Bs 200 to Bs 220, while fixed-route car fares increased from Bs 400 to Bs 440. The pricing structure was designed to remain anchored to a value of $0.25, with a 20% surcharge permitted on Sundays, holidays, and after 9:00 p.m.

By early October, stakeholders in the transportation sector began calling for further adjustments. Union representatives urged employers to implement a transportation bonus to assist low-wage earners struggling with commuting costs. Simultaneously, the Venezuelan Chamber of Transport Companies stated that the current social fare of US$ 0.25 is insufficient to cover operating costs, which are estimated to be between US$ 0.70 and US$ 1.00. To address these issues, industry leaders proposed the implementation of an automated payment system for daily fare adjustments and suggested subsidies for students, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
