Claudia Rodríguez detained by ICE at Fort Lauderdale airport after TPS ends
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained 28‑year‑old Venezuelan Claudia Carolina Rodríguez Caglianone at Fort Lauderdale airport while she was boarding a domestic flight to North Carolina. Rodríguez, a former captain of a Miami university soccer team, entered the United States legally in 2017 on a tourist visa, later applied for asylum and was granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in 2023. The TPS for Venezuelans, Haitians and other nationals expired under a policy originally instituted by the Trump administration, and her detention occurred amid a broader increase in ICE airport operations.
After being taken from the security checkpoint, Rodríguez was transferred to ICE detention facilities in Miramar and then Pompano Beach. Her family and U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz have launched a campaign for her release, criticizing the agency’s actions as an “invasion of airports.” A GoFundMe page has been created to raise money for immigration legal assistance.
