Venezuelan footballer detained, released on bail
Overview
In late July 2026, ICE agents detained 28‑year‑old Venezuelan asylum seeker and former university soccer captain Claudia Rodríguez at Fort Lauderdale‑Hollywood International Airport after the United States ended Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans. She had entered the U.S. in 2017 on a tourist visa, later sought asylum and was granted TPS, which expired in November 2025. The operation was described by ICE as a targeted airport sweep. Rodríguez was moved among the Miramar, Pompano Beach and Broward Transition Center facilities, where she reported floor sleeping, expired food, limited medical care and “psychological abuse” that made her feel like a criminal.
Rodríguez, now a professional footballer preparing to travel to a World Cup 2026 match, said she was unable to bathe and received only a few hours of rest. She was released on bail on 3 August 2026, reuniting with her family and pledging to become a voice for other detained migrants. The case drew criticism from Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, local activists and U.S. officials, highlighting the broader surge in ICE airport arrests following the TPS termination.
