Venezuelan General Carlos Piña Released After 2022 Detention

On 19 June 2026, the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) confirmed the release of frigate general Carlos Piña, who had been held since 2022 in the Western Penitentiary Center in Santa Ana, Táchira, Venezuela. He was detained on charges of illicit immigration, criminal association and conspiracy linked to an alleged plot against President Nicolás Maduro, and had been accused of transporting U.S. citizen Jerrel Kenetmore from Táchira to Valencia. Clippve said Piña suffered forced disappearance and torture during his confinement. The organization welcomed his freedom and reunion with family, while urging justice, respect for human rights and reparations for the more than 400 political prisoners still incarcerated in Venezuela.
