Venezuelan Opposition Leaders Call for Elections and Review 2015 Assembly Agenda

Opposition figure María Corina Machado and president‑elect Edmundo González Urrutia summoned the Platform Unitaria Democrática and signatories of the Panama Manifesto to a meeting in Caracas. The gathering aimed to examine the “joint work agenda” announced by the 2015‑elected National Assembly and to decide on a public position before the agenda’s implementation on 1 August.

In the state of Anzoátegui, the Platform Unitaria Democrática reiterated its demand for free elections as essential for the country’s reconstruction after the June 24 earthquakes. Representatives said a legitimate government is needed to attract foreign investment and restore institutional credibility, and they endorsed Machado as the opposition’s candidate. The party also called for a new National Electoral Council and the continuation of aid centres for earthquake victims.
