Opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia issued a joint statement on 26 July 2026 declaring that they did not take part in the design, construction or operation of the dialogue mechanism between the 2015‑elected National Assembly and the interim government of Delcy Rodríguez. They said they will not be an obstacle to any initiative that produces real progress and will evaluate the process only on concrete, verifiable results – restoration of democratic institutions, release of all political prisoners, guarantees for all actors, a timely presidential election schedule and full respect for popular sovereignty.

The dialogue is scheduled to begin on 1 August 2026, promoted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who described it as a significant proposal and said Machado could play an important role. The talks are to be led by the 2015 Assembly president Dinorah Figuera and government representative Jorge Rodríguez, brother of interim president Delcy Rodríguez. Opposition figures such as PSUV chief Diosdado Cabello have demanded that lifting of sanctions be part of the negotiations.

The process follows the devastating earthquakes of 24 June 2026, which caused more than 5 500 deaths, at least 16 740 injuries and nearly 18 000 people homeless. Various opposition groups have called for citizen assemblies and highlighted the two‑year anniversary of the disputed 2024 presidential election, but Machado and González reiterated they will not hinder any effort that advances democratic transition.
