Opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia issued a joint statement on 26 July 2026 saying they did not take part in the design, construction or operation of the dialogue mechanism between the 2015 National Assembly and the interim government. They affirmed they will not be an obstacle to any initiative that produces verifiable progress toward a democratic transition and said they will assess the process on concrete criteria: restoration of democratic institutions, release of all political prisoners, guarantees for all actors, a timely presidential election schedule and respect for popular sovereignty.

The dialogue, promoted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is scheduled to begin on 1 August 2026. It was temporarily halted after the devastating 24 June 2026 earthquakes (magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5) that left over 5,500 dead and nearly 18,000 homeless. Machado and González called for a new government with moral authority and managerial capacity and announced their intention to return to Venezuela to accompany the people and help build a national agreement for reconstruction.
