Venezuelan opposition seeks democratic transition amid fragmentation

The Venezuelan opposition remains fragmented following the departure of Nicolás Maduro and the installation of an interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez. While various parties, regional leaders, and democratic organizations share the common goal of a democratic transition and free, fair elections, they remain divided over strategy and their relationship with the United States.

A negotiation table facilitated by the United States government took place between August 6 and August 12, 2026. Dinorah Figuera, associated with Primero Justicia, was designated as a representative for these talks, alongside other leaders from Primero Justicia and Voluntad Popular. Notably, prominent figures María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia were not part of these specific negotiations.

Although progress has been made regarding the reform of the Supreme Tribunal, no definitive agreement has been reached concerning the reform of the National Electoral Council or the scheduling of future elections. The opposition continues to contest the 2024 election results, maintaining that González Urrutia was the true winner based on tally sheets and international observers.
