Venezuelan Prison System Faces Scrutiny After 49 Inmate Deaths Reported

The Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones (OVP) documented 49 inmate deaths between April and July 2026 in Venezuela, including 48 men and one woman. Forty‑seven deaths occurred inside prison facilities and two in police detention cells, largely from preventable illnesses such as tuberculosis, severe dehydration and acute diarrhoea, which the OVP says resulted from inadequate medical care.

The OVP also called for an independent investigation into the August 3 death of Clorobaldo Araujo Vergara, who allegedly hanged himself in the Western Prison Center I in Táchira. It highlighted three other recent deaths—Yoandry Medina González in Maracaibo, Ramón Alexis Franco in Carabobo and Luis Felipe Moreno Moreno in Anzoátegui—each linked to insufficient health services. The organization urged the Venezuelan Ministry for Prison Service and the prosecutor’s office to launch transparent, exhaustive inquiries and to improve humanitarian health provisions for all detainees.
