Venezuelan protests invoke Bolivar as nation marks historic independence battles

On July 24, social and communal movements gathered in Caracas’s Plaza Bolívar, invoking the legacy of Simón Bolívar to demand greater national sovereignty and to reject perceived foreign interference. Former deputies Mario Silva and Fernando Rivero told Sputnik that the commemoration coincides with debates over popular organization and a possible U.S.-led dialogue, urging a grassroots counter‑response.

The same date also marks the 203rd anniversary of the 1823 Battle of Lake Maracaibo, the final major clash of Venezuela’s independence war. Patriotic forces under Admiral José Prudencio Padilla and General Manuel Manrique defeated Spanish commanders Francisco Tomás Morales and Ángel Laborde, suffering 8 officers and 36 troops killed with 195 wounded, while Spanish losses exceeded 800. The victory paved the way for the fall of the remaining Spanish stronghold at Puerto Cabello and the full emancipation of Venezuela.
