Simón Bolívar 2026 birthday observances & quake follow‑up

On 24 July 2026 Venezuela marked the 243rd anniversary of Simón Bolívar’s birth with state ceremonies, floral tributes and a minute of silence for the victims of the 24 June double‑earthquake. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez used the occasion to unveil a national reconstruction master plan, citing 5,546 deaths, 16,740 injuries, 17,907 homeless and US$19.6 billion in damages.

The Colegio de Ingenieros de Venezuela (CIV) reported that more than 8,000 buildings in Caracas have been inspected; over 70 % are deemed habitable, about a quarter require caution or are uninhabitable, with a goal of 12,000 assessments and roughly 6,000 volunteer engineers. Municipal authorities in Chacao have cleared more than 83,000 tonnes of rubble and are debating a seismic‑alert system, a model later discussed for Zulia. The World Bank echoed the damage figure and warned that slow rebuilding could impede economic recovery for up to a decade.

A high‑level reshuffle of the Bolivarian National Armed Force confirmed Gustavo González López as defence minister and appointed new commanders for the army, navy, air force and regional defence zones.

Opposition groups continued to mobilise, gathering in Bolívar‑named squares and invoking Bolívar’s legacy to demand greater sovereignty. On 27 July they also commemorated the 203rd anniversary of the 1823 Battle of Lake Maracaibo, recalling its decisive role in Venezuela’s independence.
