Venice Commission requests meetings regarding Romania's Fritz amendment
The Venice Commission has requested meetings with various Romanian institutions to prepare an opinion on the so-called “Fritz amendment” within the Integrity Law. The upcoming opinion will analyze whether the transitional provisions of Law no. 180/2026 comply with European and international standards. The opinion is expected to be adopted during a plenary session on December 11-12, 2026.
The Commission seeks discussions with the Parliament, including separate sessions with both majority and opposition representatives. Other requested meetings involve the Presidency, the Constitutional Court, the High Court of Cassation and Justice, the Ministry of Justice, the National Integrity Agency, the Permanent Electoral Authority, and the People's Advocate.
The amendment in question follows legislation that could lead to the retroactive termination of mandates for certain officials, such as the former mayor of Timișoara, Dominic Fritz. This legal development has drawn scrutiny from European political groups, including the EPP and Renew, who have raised concerns regarding the rule of law and electoral rights.
