Venâncio Mondlane seeks international aid over Mozambique political violence
Venâncio Mondlane, leader of the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (ANAMOLA), has issued an international appeal calling for intervention by human rights organizations following reports of escalating political violence in Mozambique.
ANAMOLA reports that 57 of its members have been assassinated since August 2025. The party also cites 436 additional cases of extreme violence against its members and organizational structures. The most recent victim, Ilídio Facitela Gustavo, a party mobilizer in Inhambane province, was reportedly kidnapped and found dead in Homoíne. Gustavo was identified as a witness in the legal proceedings currently facing Mondlane.
Mondlane is facing five criminal charges related to post-election protests, including incitement to terrorism and public apology for a crime. He has rejected these charges, characterizing the legal process as political persecution. The party is seeking international monitoring, independent investigative missions, and protection for witnesses and their families.
