Venâncio Mondlane to face Supreme Court trial in Mozambique

Mozambican politician and Anamola party president Venâncio Mondlane has announced that the Supreme Court has scheduled him for trial later this year. Mondlane, who was the second-most voted presidential candidate in the October 2024 general elections, faces five charges, including public apology for crime, incitement to collective disobedience, public instigation of crime, and incitement to terrorism.

The prosecution stems from the unrest following the 2024 elections, during which Mondlane contested the results that declared Daniel Chapo the winner. The subsequent period of social agitation and protests led to significant violence, resulting in hundreds of deaths and widespread destruction of public and private property.

Mondlane stated that his defense has been notified and has ten days to respond or request a postponement. He characterized the legal proceedings as politically motivated but expressed readiness to face the trial, suggesting the upcoming legal battle could mark a new phase in the country's political life.
