Venus research reveals insights into cloud composition and lunar history

Recent scientific research has provided new insights into the atmospheric and historical characteristics of Venus. An international research team, including Dr. Jan Spacek from the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution, has addressed the long-standing mystery of the “unknown absorber” in Venusian clouds. While the planet appears pale yellow in visible light, ultraviolet imaging reveals dark and light patterns within its sulfuric acid clouds. By combining observations with radiation transfer modeling, researchers estimated the light-absorption properties required for the liquid within cloud droplets to replicate the planet's ultraviolet and blue reflectivity.

Separately, new models developed by a team led by Professor Stephen Kane at the University of California, Riverside, suggest that Venus may have once possessed a moon, similar to the collision that formed Earth's Moon. However, the study indicates that the probability of such a satellite surviving long-term is extremely low. Factors such as the planet's rotation rate and solar gravitational influence mean that even if a debris disk formed a moon, it likely would have been torn apart or lost within 1.7 billion years, far short of the planet's four-billion-year history.
