Overview

Researchers have investigated the composition of Venusian clouds to explain the presence of dark ultraviolet markings within the planet’s sulfuric acid cloud deck. Using radiative-transfer modeling, an international team led by Dr. Jan Spacek estimated the absorption coefficient required for the liquid inside cloud droplets to match observed ultraviolet and blue reflectance.

The findings suggest that the mysterious absorber must either be present in unusually high concentrations or possess “remarkable light-absorption efficiency.”

In related planetary research, new models suggest that Venus may have once possessed a moon similar to Earth’s. However, researchers indicate the probability of such a satellite surviving long-term is extremely low, as gravitational influences and the planet’s rotation likely would have destroyed any such moon within 1.7 billion years.
