Veracruz braces for heavy rains with up to 100 mm accumulations this week

The state civil protection agency warns that Veracruz will experience a week of intensified rain from July 13 to July 17, with the most significant accumulations expected on Wednesday through Friday. Models forecast that some mountainous and central‑southern basins could receive more than 100 mm of rain, raising the risk of river flooding, rapid‑rise streams, and landslides.

On Sunday, July 12, a tropical wave (number 18) interacting with a semi‑permanent trough over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico is expected to boost rainfall further. General forecasts call for 5–20 mm, but isolated areas in the central basins, the upper Papaloapan, and coastal plains may see 70–100 mm in 24 hours. Authorities advise residents to stay updated on forecasts, avoid flood‑prone zones, and follow civil protection instructions.

The civil protection office emphasizes that rain patterns may shift from evening‑night storms early in the week to possible early‑morning showers later, increasing the chance of flash flooding and slope failures in mountainous districts such as Huayacocotla, Orizaba, and Córdoba.
