Veracruz mayors Bertín Bravo and Raúl González face impeachment hearings
On 30 July 2026 the Veracruz Permanent Instructora Commission held two hearings on the declaration of procedencia (impeachment) of municipal presidents Bertín Bravo Montero of Úrsulo Galván and Raúl González Martínez of Ixhuatlán del Sureste. The sessions, conducted in the Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada auditorium, featured representatives of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the mayors with their legal counsel. The commission will decide within three days whether to recommend the full Congress remove the constitutional immunity of the two officials.
Bravo’s defence rejected any link to the disappearance of businessman Héctor Ramos Sánchez, stating the entrepreneur left the meeting after discussing a sale of construction material. González’s defence argued that the photograph presented as evidence of his involvement in journalist Roxana Guzmán’s murder was generated with artificial intelligence and does not appear in the investigation file. Both mayors maintain their right to defense and the presumption of innocence, with González asserting he will not flee the country and will face the legal process.
The case also involves earlier detentions of several municipal police officers from Ixhuatlán del Sureste in connection with the journalist’s killing. The state prosecutor has formally requested the removal of the mayors’ immunity, but no conclusive evidence linking González to the murder has been presented.
