CFE restores power after major outage in Veracruz, Mexico

A large-scale electricity interruption struck the northern part of Veracruz on the night of 4 July 2026, leaving thousands of residents without power during a heat wave that topped 30 °C. The outage affected the municipalities of Veracruz, Boca del Río, La Antigua and Puente Nacional, with reports of total blackouts and voltage fluctuations in neighborhoods such as El Coyol, Puente Moreno and the historic centre.

The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) later explained that the incident began when a low‑voltage line in the Veracruz distribution zone went out of service, causing an initial outage in La Antigua and Puente National. Efforts to correct the fault caused a second line to fail, extending the disruption to Veracruz and Boca del Río. CFE crews, in coordination with the National Energy Control Center (CENACE), restored service to 100 % by the early hours of 5 July.

Earlier on 4 July, CFE had reported a fire in pastureland near the Veracruz Uno substation that did not affect the infrastructure or supply. That incident was separate from the later outage, which was traced to the low‑voltage line failure rather than any damage to the substation.
