Veracruz officials commemorate International Day of Indigenous Peoples

In Zaragoza, Veracruz, officials and indigenous representatives gathered to commemorate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. The event was led by Governor Rocío Nahle García and included representatives from various ethnic groups, such as the Zapotec, Nahuatl, Popoluca, Zoque, Mixtec, and Chinanteco.

During the commemoration, participants highlighted the importance of reforms to Article 2 of the Federal Constitution and Article 5 of the Local Political Constitution. Indigenous representative Eucario de los Santos Cruz described these legislative changes as "the most important reform in our history since the War of Independence," stating they initiated a process to end discrimination and subjugation under previous neoliberal governments.

Governor Nahle García emphasized that indigenous peoples are the foundation of Veracruz and pledged continued work against discrimination. The event also recognized the role of traditional midwives, including Rosa Martínez Antonio, who highlighted the sacred nature of the profession in serving their communities.
