Overview

The United Nations observed the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples on August 9, 2026. Other regional activities included land rights protests by over 5,000 people in Chiapas, the recognition of the ‘metepantle’ agricultural system in Tlaxcala, and discussions regarding President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's proposal to rename Paso de Cortés to ‘Paso de los Pueblos Indígenas.’

In Yucatán, Mayan communities marched in Mérida to demand respect for collective rights and to denounce the criminalization of land defenders. In Chiapas, demonstrations also targeted territorial displacement, violence, and environmental destruction caused by infrastructure projects such as the Palenque-San Cristóbal highway.

Globally, the observance addressed systemic challenges including land dispossession and socio-economic vulnerability. In The Hague, ceremonies at the Slavery Monument focused on visibility and recognition. In Suriname, the VHP party called for legal regulations to protect Indigenous collective rights. Additional activities included midwifery celebrations in Peru and Brazil, and calls from PARLACEN for the ethical use of artificial intelligence to preserve ancestral languages.
