Veracruz reports 69 human cases of botfly (myiasis) in 2026
The state of Veracruz has recorded 69 human cases of myiasis caused by the botfly Cochliomyia hominivorax in 2026, accounting for 23.4% of the 295 confirmed cases nationwide this year. Including 2025 data, Veracruz’s total rises to 70 cases, representing 17.6% of the national tally. No deaths have been reported in Veracruz.
Nationally, health authorities have confirmed 412 human botfly cases since the beginning of the surveillance period, with two fatalities. Chiapas leads the country with 139 cases, followed by Veracruz, Oaxaca (36 cases) and Yucatán (33 cases). The federal Secretariat of Health continues epidemiological monitoring in humans, while animal health surveillance remains under agricultural authorities.
