Veracruz reports highest number of human screw-worm cases in Mexico
Veracruz has recorded the highest number of human cases of screw-worm myiasis in Mexico during 2026. According to the Epidemiological Bulletin from the Ministry of Health, the state has accumulated 113 confirmed cases as of September 11, representing approximately 20 percent of the 564 total confirmed cases nationwide this year.
In addition to the high case count, Veracruz has reported one death associated with the disease. Other Mexican states reporting significant numbers of cases include Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, Yucatán, Guerrero, and San Luis Potosí.
Myiasis is caused by the larvae of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax, which can infest the wounds or tissues of both humans and animals. The Ministry of Health is maintaining specific epidemiological surveillance for detection and follow-up.
