Veracruz reports surge in dengue cases and leads nation in human myiasis infections

The Mexican state of Veracruz recorded 354 confirmed dengue infections through epidemiological week 23 of 2026, including 171 non‑severe cases, 176 with warning signs and seven severe cases, and one fatality. This places Veracruz among the five Mexican states with the highest dengue burden, accounting for about 79 % of the country’s cases. The total number of dengue infections has fallen from 644 the same week in 2025. Health officials identified dengue virus serotype 3 as dominant, with serotype 4 also detected, and urged residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and seek care for fever and related symptoms.

In the same period, Veracruz led the nation in human infections by the Cochliomyia hominivorax (myiasis‑causing fly), reporting 69 cases in week 22—over 23 % of all Mexican cases. No deaths have been reported this year, contrasting with isolated fatalities in Oaxaca and Yucatán. The state also ranks third nationally for livestock infestations, with 4,131 animal cases recorded in 2026. Authorities have called for improved hygiene and prompt medical treatment for affected individuals.
