Veracruz reports surge in screw-worm fly (myiasis) cases

Veracruz is now the second Mexican state with the highest number of confirmed myiasis cases caused by the screw‑worm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax). The latest epidemiological report shows 70 cases in Veracruz, accounting for 17 % of the national total of 412 cases recorded between 2025 and 2026. Only Chiapas reported more cases (139).

The state also leads in the number of affected municipalities, with 46 of the 224 municipalities identified in the report. Rural populations, men and people over 60 are the most impacted groups. About 58 % of cases had recent contact with animals, mainly dogs and cattle, while 42 % reported no animal exposure.

Health authorities advise heightened vigilance for untreated wounds, better hygiene, wound protection, and prompt medical care. Treatment consists of removing larvae, cleaning the wound and providing medical follow‑up to avoid serious complications.
