Veracruz water utility GMAS addresses sinkhole claims
Grupo Metropolitano de Agua y Saneamiento (GMAS) issued a statement responding to comments by Isabel Martínez, director of Veracruz’s Municipal Public Works, who alleged that the water concessionaire was responsible for street damage caused by recent works. GMAS explained that sinkholes arise from multiple factors such as soil type, heavy rains, maintenance issues, and tree roots, and clarified that the municipal authority holds responsibility for storm‑water infrastructure. The company reported 74 sinkhole incidents in June, with 41 already repaired, 10 under remediation, 6 awaiting verification, and 17 related to other problems. GMAS said it collaborates daily with public‑works staff via a WhatsApp coordination group to inform operations about road interventions and to ensure joint supervision where needed.
