Veraguas communities face water contamination risks after mine landslide
Residents in the Veraguas province of Panama are demanding answers following a landslide at the former Remance mine. The incident, triggered by an earthquake on October 9, caused accumulated mining material to collapse down a slope and into the Quebrada Veneno stream.
Local communities, including La Gorda, report that the water has changed in color, carries a foul odor, and contains visible sediment. Some residents have reported health issues, such as vomiting and diarrhea, after consuming the water, though a direct link to mining contamination has not yet been officially confirmed.
While the state has provided temporary relief through bottled water, residents express frustration over a lack of clear information from authorities. They are currently awaiting the results of water quality samples collected by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Health to determine the extent of the contamination and necessary safety measures.
