Veraguas water contamination following mine landslide

Overview

Following an earthquake on October 9, a landslide at the former Remance mine in Panama’s Veraguas province caused mining material to collapse into the Quebrada Veneno stream. Local communities, such as La Gorda, reported that the water changed color, developed a foul odor, and contained visible sediment. Some residents reported health issues, including vomiting and diarrhea, after consuming the water.

In response, the Panamanian Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) launched monitoring and sanitation efforts. Minsa reported finding total and fecal coliforms in specific water samples, leading to the distribution of chlorine tablets and reinforced chlorination processes.

MiAmbiente initiated a sanitation plan to address microbiological alterations and potential metal contamination. This includes constructing sanitary services and septic tanks in La Gorda to mitigate fecal coliform contamination, while engineering assessments are underway to plan containment and remediation at the landslide site.
