Vereniging Eigen Huis calls for energy cost ceiling in Netherlands

The Vereniging Eigen Huis (VEH) is calling on the Dutch House of Representatives to establish a cost ceiling for cumulative energy measures to protect households from rising bills. The association argues that various policies—such as the abolition of the net metering scheme in 2027, increased gas taxes, rising electricity and gas transport costs, and the mandatory blending of green gas—are being treated as isolated issues by the government, whereas they represent a significant combined financial burden for homeowners.

VEH proposes a framework where any new measure impacting energy costs must be tested against this ceiling. If a measure causes costs to exceed the limit, it should be adjusted or households should receive compensation.

Additionally, the association criticized the government's budget regarding elderly housing. While 1.1 billion euros is allocated for elderly housing through 2035, VEH claims this is insufficient to meet the goal of building 290,000 suitable homes by 2030, noting that the actual requirement involves tens of billions of euros to solve structural shortages and improve housing market mobility.
