Dermata Waterfalls tragedy: 18-year-old woman dies in drowning accident

An 18-year-old woman has died following an accident at the Dermata Waterfalls near Veria, Greece. The victim, who was set to celebrate her 18th birthday, was visiting the area with a 17-year-old friend.

According to reports, the young woman had asked her friend to take her photograph while she was in the water. Witnesses and the friend stated that she suddenly fell backward into the lake and disappeared beneath the surface. The friend immediately alerted emergency services via 112.

A rescue operation involving 12 firefighters and divers from the 2nd EMAK was launched. Divers located the woman unconscious at the bottom of the lake, but she was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.

Forensic examinations in Naousa have identified drowning as the cause of death. Authorities are investigating whether a medical emergency, such as a seizure or cardiac arrest, preceded the fall, as the victim had a known history of epilepsy. Toxicology and laboratory results are pending to clarify the exact circumstances. The friend has provided a statement to the police, and his mobile phone has been seized to examine photographic evidence from the moments leading up to the incident.
