Verimi to shut down by 2026 as EU launches mandatory digital ID wallet
Verimi, a Berlin‑based digital‑identity platform founded in 2018 by a consortium of major German companies, provides an ID‑wallet that lets users store their ID documents for use with banks, insurers, mobility services and health‑ID applications. The company, which became profitable in 2024 and employs around 80 staff, announced it will cease all business activities by the end of 2026.
The shutdown is driven by recent EU regulatory changes – a revised eIDAS regulation and new EU anti‑money‑laundering rules – that require each member state to offer a free, state‑run European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI). The public EUDI wallet will duplicate Verimi’s core service, leaving little market for the private provider. Verimi will continue to serve existing customers until December 2026 and will seek socially responsible solutions for its workforce.
Clients that have integrated Verimi’s identity services, such as banks, insurers and statutory health insurers, must migrate to the forthcoming EUDI wallet before the 2026 deadline.
