Balkan war crime anniversaries prompt calls for justice
Commemorations are being held to mark anniversaries of wartime killings in the Balkans. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Sanski Most Campfighters Association is marking the anniversary of the killing of 65 civilians in Sasina. Sadmir Alibegović, president of the association, noted that the victims were taken from Sanski Most in 1995 under false promises of prisoner exchange before being killed. Families are calling for more urgent investigations and indictments from the Prosecutor's Office.
In Croatia, the documentation center Veritas marked the anniversary of the massacre at the Korana Bridge in Karlovac, where 13 Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) reservists were killed in September 1991. Veritas reported that after surrendering their weapons, a group of reservists was executed by masked individuals. While Mihajlo Miša Hrastov was convicted in 2015, Veritas noted that no other individuals have been prosecuted for the event, and criticized the institutional celebration of Hrastov in Karlovac.
